Could I be a better man?
Could I make you understand?
Can you read the lifeline in my hand?
Does it say I'll be a better man?

Could you be a better man?
Could I make you understand?
You say that this life is all we get,
Then press to your lips another cigarette....

You wake up in the morning and lay blinking through the haze,
The dirty rays of sunlight falling where your bed was made,
And you wonder what the point was, what the meaning of it is,
You wish to go on dreaming 'bout the life you'd like to lead,
And stop walking on the razorblades you put there on your own,
You wish you'd never left the womb, you wish you'd stayed at home,
So you shed of all illusion that it will be alright,
And you catch yourself pretending that it once again is night,

You're walking down the street with a top-hat on your head,
If the paving-stones were mirrors you'd be better of than dead,
And your wearing that old mohair suit your grandfather wore,
When he stared into the eyes of his sweetheart in the war,
And your hand is swinging freely back and forwards by your side,
But your eyes are deeply sullen cos the truth you cannot hide,
And the spring that's in your step is just a momentary thing,
And you never knew the words to that song you always sing,

Sailed out to sea,
We thought that we'd see,
What we could be,
The main-sail set,
Our course we laid,
Into the distance,
Our journey made ....
But the waves came crashing down around us when we were out of sight,
And we struggled to control her long into the night,
Tossed and turned and turned and tossed by the mercy of the waves,
We stared into the deep grey swell of our early graves,
When perchance I found my ticket stub and looked at what was wrote,
"One way journey into life in small glass-bottomed boat,
